NEW MENTAL HEALTH MILESTONE FOR THE REGION

NEW MENTAL HEALTH MILESTONE FOR THE REGION

Tamworth’s world class, $58 million new mental health unit has reaches a new milestone, with construction of the structure completed.

Member for Tamworth Kevin Anderson joined with the Tamworth Mental Health Carers Support Network in celebrating the milestone.

“Building a new state-of-the-art mental health unit has been a major goal of this community for a number of years, and every milestone on the construction of the facility deserves to be celebrated,” Mr Anderson said.

“That’s why it was outstanding to be on site yesterday, seeing the scaffolding coming down and the building ready to be fitted out over the coming months.

“This will be a one of the best facilities in regional Australia, with 37 beds, including four beds for adolescents and eight beds specifically for seniors, meaning every part of our community will have access to acute mental health services when they need them.

“This is so important for children and adolescents who will be able to access help closer to home and ends the practice of sending kids away to Newcastle’s NEXUS facility.

“The facility will provide welcoming, comfortable, safe and supportive facilities, while also expanding the services available in our area, meaning more people will be able to access help closer to home.

“Our community gives thanks to the Tamworth Mental Health Carers Support Group who have been instrumental in the campaign to build a better Banksia.

“From pounding the pavement, getting signatures for their petition, to helping with the codesign of the facility, this could not have happened without their advocacy and advice.”

Health have stated that the unit is on track for completion later this year. For more information visit http://hneinfra.health.nsw.gov.au/projects/tamworth-mental-health-unit
